Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has asked Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to suspend the ongoing teacher performance contracting until all the stakeholders agree on the parameters of engagement.
Knut national chairman Mudzo Nzili said the government cannot force the performance contracting down the throats of teachers whereas the necessary rules of engagement have not been agreed on.
Speaking in Embu during the Knut branch elections, Nzili said there is no way a teacher in Nairobi and another in the rural can be subjected into the same contractual terms whereas the environmental conditions are not the same.
“Before a teacher signs the agreement, there must be an understanding, how many children should the teacher teach, what is the workload between Monday and Friday, if they are in excess, how much are you paying for the excess time,” he said.
Collect signatures
Elsewhere, the union’s secretary general Wilson Sossion threatened to collect signatures from members and send TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia and chairperson Lydia Nzomo home if they will not withdraw the performance contract push.
He said both Macharia and Nzomo were using dictatorial methods to manage teachers.
Speaking at Amagoro Primary School during the Teso branch elections, Sossion told the TSC to stop using threats and intimidation so that teachers could accept to sign the forms.
