Cord politicians led by senators James Orengo (left) and Johnstone Muthama said runaway corruption in government emboldens their push for a referendum.

Revelations of inflated expenditure in Devolution ministry sparked mixed reactions yesterday with Cord terming it a proof of runaway corruption in government and TNA absolving Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru of blame.

TNA secretary general Onyango Oloo and executive director Joseph Mathai claimed the Opposition is behind the woes facing Waiguru, whom Cord leader Raila Odinga wants to step aside following the Sh791 million scandal at the National Youth Service.

“We have seen a trend where the Opposition lumps blame on the government to bring it down and accusations against Waiguru are just but one of those machinations by a hapless and negligent Opposition,” charged Oloo.

And last evening, 15 Jubilee MPs were holed up at a Nairobi hotel to strategise on how to handle an impeachment motion filed by Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter against Waiguru, which some of them have backed. However, Cord senators James Orengo (Siaya), Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) and Elizabeth Ongoro (Nominated) accused the government of abetting corruption among its senior officers even at a time the economy is bleeding.

Muthama claimed the Devolution ministry’s overblown expenditure is just but a tip of the iceberg and more could be in the offing. The trio announced that Cord will on Monday deliver the more than a million signatures collected through its Okoa Kenya referendum drive to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and, thereafter, hold a rally at Uhuru Park.

“We are keen to right the wrongs inflicted on Kenyans by a government that has become a parasite. So we return to where we began a year ago. We are going for a referendum. On Monday we will deliver the signatures,” said Orengo.

“We have no option but to proceed with the quest for a referendum to strengthen our governance, end corruption, cushion institutions from a marauding regime and take more money to the grassroots,” he added at a press conference in Nairobi. Ongoro said the level of corruption under the Jubilee government has soared to cancerous levels.
