Nandi Governor Cleophas Lagat is on the spot over alleged embezzlement of funds in the county. In a petition to the Senate, the residents want the governor to be held to accountable not only for misusing funds but also for flouting the Public Procurement and Disposal Act (PPDA).

In a petition presented to the Senate Legal Affairs Committee by the Nandi County Civil Society Network through its chairman Shadrack Tarno, and Transparency group represented by Kiprotich Cherargei, the petitioners accused the County Government of obstructing access to information, in breach of Article 35 of the Constitution and the county governments Act 2012.

Petitioners urged senators to investigate the affairs of the county and ensure individuals who received monies irregularly are surcharged. “There is massive corruption and wastage of resources and we request you to look into this matter,” read part of the statement.

The three claimed their only hope is in the Senate as the members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have been compromised by the executive. They said whenever they raise grievances, MCAs take advantage and extort money from the executive. They argued their efforts to call for probe into various scandals have been fruitless.
