Controversial gynaecologist Mugo wa Wairimu to be remanded in Kamiti prison until Monday 5 after he was charged with rape and 11 other counts today.
A Nairobi court denied him bail and allowed police to assess the scene of crime and obtain records from various government agencies before Monday when Mugo is expected back in court.
Mugo, who passed himself as a gynaecologist, operating two clinics, at Githurai 44 and Kahawa West, also posed as an activist for social issues in his hunting ground.
Late last year, Mugo shot to the limelight when he rescued a young girl who had been abused by her father in Githurai estate in Nairobi. The badly bruised girl was admitted to one of his clinics where he treated her for free as he lobbied for the arrest of her father.
However, his veil of pretence had peeled off after secret recording in one of his clinics showed him sedating a woman who had gone to seek treatment, then raping her.
The pictures, first shown on Citizen TV a month ago, elicited rage from Kenyans on social media who called for the arrest of the man. At Githurai 44 and Kahawa West, police had to stop angry residents from burning his clinics after they pulled down his billboards.
