Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua yesterday pledged to table a dossier before Senate, implicating elected leaders in the country to land grabbing of various parcels and property worth Sh960 million in the county.
He promised to unleash documented evidence before the Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee on Thursday, saying the said rogue land grabbers have crippled the operations of his administration.
Appearing before the watchdog committee chaired by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o yesterday, Mutua said the encroachment of public land at Mavoko and Syokimau has crippled his administration’s efforts to set up essential public utilities.
This is after he was tasked to shed light on a query raised by Auditor General Edward Ouko which showed that an undetermined number of land parcels and buildings belonging to the county did not have title deeds and were prone to grabbing by unscrupulous individuals.
“If you want to bring someone’s name, then it must be on oath and in evidence form so that we don’t get caught up in extraneous issues in this committee. Please submit whatever you are saying in writing so that we can admit it as part of evidence,” said Martha Wangari (Nominated Senator).
Mutua said the illegal encroachment of public land in the county took place before his administration took over from the defunct local authority in 2013. “This massive land grabbing that went on at Mavoko and Syokimau was perpetuated by individuals some of whom are presently elected politicians.
The public parcels of land were dished out to individuals, title deed allotments issued and later on structures were built even in riparian areas,” said Mutua.
