Fresh details emerged yesterday on the recent move to impeach Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who had assented to the motion later disowning it.

Instead, they maintain their signatures were for a motion meant to impeach Nairobi Assembly Speaker Alex ole Magelo who approved tabling of the motion on Kidero, a day before he left for Mombasa.

People Daily established that MCAs whose signatures are on record are set to publicly disassociate themselves with the controversial motion at a press briefing slated for tomorrow.

Backtracking

According to documents in our possession, Viwandani MCA Samwel Nyang’wara filed the motion of impeachment in July.

Over the weekend, MCAs drawn from both Jubilee and Cord coalitions agreed on modalities to renege on Nyangwara’s motion.

“We did not assent to the motion to impeach the governor, instead, the sponsor of the private motion Samwel Nyangwara and the Speaker are behind this unfortunate scheme having duped us. We are not part of it,” claimed one of the MCAs, who is one of those said to have changed his mind on the motion.

Similarly, Kidero’s top aide and Chief of Staff George Wainaina has come to the defence of his boss saying last week’s private impeachment motion against the governor is ill-intentioned.

“The motion is an act of sabotage to disrupt ongoing programmes and projects. Of importance is that this was a private motion which is not sponsored by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party which Nyangwara belongs to,” said Wainaina.

Fist fight

The motion was signed by 56 MCAs, majority of who are nominees and had earlier been approved by Magelo. Ugly scenes played out on the floor of the Chamber with MCAs engaging in a fist fight.

It will take two-thirds of the 127 members of the County Assembly to remove the governor from office. Cord has 64 members, while Jubilee has 63. Like Nyang’wara, Cord MCA Diana Kapeen (South C) has moved to Jubilee.

The approved motion, which comes as a bruising battle is shaping up in earnest ahead of next year’s poll, has largely been described as a move to disrupt Kidero ahead of the campaigns.
