A political storm has erupted in Murang’a county after a move by Governor Mwangi wa Iria to dissolve area TNA branch in preparation to join the Jubilee Party (JP) allegedly without involving key party honchos. He led his stalwarts to disband the branch ahead of JP’s national delegates’ convention tomorrow, in a move that immediately ignited a fresh political battle.

His move seems to have given the governor an edge over his rivals, as the former is likely to be perceived positively amid his dwindling political fortunes in the county.

Elsewhere, former assistant minister Koigi wa Wamwere decamped to JP, saying it is the right outfit to foster national unity and harmony among Kenyans. He said he consulted widely with the new outfit leaders and was assured all ideologies were welcomed.

Koigi folded his Chama Cha Mwananchi, saying the move should not be construed to mean as working against the spirit of multiparty democracy, which he, with others, fought for bravely. “Multiparty democracy is protected in the Constitution and hence cannot be abolished,” he said.

“Jubilee is showing the way to mature politics which deals with ideas, unity and development.” In a meeting attended by County Women’s Rep Sabina Chege, four MPs and scores of MCAs, Iria said they had “unanimously” resolved to close all TNA county offices.
