At least 125 public hospitals and dispensaries in Uasin Gishu county have been hit by shortage of drugs and understaffing, hampering key operations at the facilities.
County Health executive Margaret Chepkwony, who raised the red flag, attributed the shortage to the red tape and the lengthy processes involved in procurement of drugs from Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa).
Addressing journalists in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Chepkwony said the county has set aside Sh180 million to buy essential drugs by October. These means patients in affected health facilities will have to wait longer before they can access medicine.
“The residents will be forced to wait due to the lengthy procures we have to follow in procuring the consignment from Kemsa,” she said, adding that most of the newly constructed hospitals in the county lack staff. Chepkowny said the county requires an additional 700 health workers to address the problem.
