The port of Mombasa has been identified as a transit point for counterfeit medicines in Africa and other affluent territories. World Customs Organisation (WCO) said counterfeit pharmaceutical medicines are shipped to Mombasa first before being reshipped to other countries because there is no risk of detection.

“This is the biggest port in East Africa, where you will find that it receives a lot of goods which are en route to other countries,” said WCO technical expert on health Sandra Wens. She said false invoicing, complicity with intermediaries, serial repackaging has highly contributed to the port becoming a transit point for fake medicines.

Wens, however, said that some of the fake pharmaceutical consignments that go missing at the port while on transit to other countries ends up in the in Kenyan market. She was addressing journalists in Mombasa on the sidelines of a workshop on combating counterfeiting and piracy of pharmaceuticals.
