Nyeri MCAs have accused Governor Nderitu Gachagua of plotting to sabotage his impeachment debate after 15 of them received summons from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
The MCAs, led by House Leader of Majority Duncan Gituanja, claim Gachagua is planning to sabotage the passing of the motion scheduled for today. He said Gachagua has developed cold feet after realising the seriousness of the matter and is now opting to use pseudo-legal means to discourage the more than 35 MCAs who have appended their signatures for his ouster.
Last week, several MCAs were involved in a brawl in which Chinga MCA Paul Ngiria was attacked by one of his colleagues after they disagreed over the planned impeachment. But the MCAs argue that the timing of the summonses is suspect given that it has been made to coincide with the day of debating the impeachment motion.
“We are suspecting that EACC officials are not acting in an independent way by issuing summonses against members same day we are supposed to be in the assembly debating the impeachment motion,” said Gituanja.
The MCAs, however, vowed not to honour the summons, saying they can only be available after they are done with the House business of the day. Kieni MP Kanini Kega said he read sinister motive over the summonses saying government institutions must act independently as stated in law and should not be seen to be acting on political influence.
