The Delamere family finally compensated the widow of a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger shot dead over 10 years ago by Tom Cholmondeley, who died last week.

Samson ole Sisina was shot dead in 2005 and his family entered into a compensation deal, which the British settler never fulfilled. But according to a reliable source, Cholmondeley’s father, Lord Hughe George Delamere, agreed to compensate Sisina’s family ahead of his son’s burial today.

According to the source, the ranger’s family was given 49 cattle. The Delameres also undertook to educate Sisina’s eight children up to university level, besides building the family a decent house.

Twenty-seven elders from the Maasai community were part of the 30-member delegation that had travelled from Narok to Cholmondeley’s Soysambu ranch in Gilgil, Nakuru county, where the day-long negotiations were held.

Only six elders were, however, allowed to take part in the negotiations. Sisina’s eldest son John Esho, 22 years, accompanied his mother to the negotiations.

The widow confirmed they had finalised the compensation deal. “The Delamere family has called us for a meeting over the issue of compensation and we are on our way there to listen to their offer,” she said before the talks. Sisina was among KWS officers who had raided the farm in May 2005 in search of game meat when he was shot dead.

Cholmondeley claimed he shot the ranger in self-defence. The then Attorney General Amos Wako later controversially terminated the murder case. The Delamere family also compensated the family of the late Robert Njoya, who was also shot dead by Cholmondeley in April, 2006 for allegedly invading his farm.

“The wife of the late Njoya was given capital to start a business while the Delamere family catered for the school fees of his two children,” said the source. Cholmondeley, who died last week while undergoing treatment at MP Shah Hospital, will be laid to rest today in his family’s Soysambu farm.

“Tom’s father has called for a low-key ceremony, with only about 20 guests expected for the burial,” said our source. Cholmondeley was the great-grandson of Lord Delamere, one of the most influential British settlers in Kenya.
