Former Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende.

Former Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende is the latest entrant into the already crowded race for Nairobi governor. He made the declaration yesterday during a Sunday service with a rider: “I am not in this race to add numbers, but as a serious contender”.

“Unlike some of the contenders, I am tested. I have served as a Speaker, a Member of Parliament among other positions and so I am equal to the task,” Marende told the congregation.

The former Emuhaya MP becomes the second aspirant with a political base in Western Kenya to announce intentions to take on incumbent Evans Kidero of ODM. Water Cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa has been endorsed by a group of Central Kenya politicians, a move that was dismissed by some Nairobi politicians as an attempt to impose him on the people of Nairobi.

But Wamalwa says he has what it takes to vie for the seat. Marende, who is the chairman of the Kenya Power Board, is seen as a pointman for Jubilee Party in Western region.

Marende and Wamalwa will have to battle it out with Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Dagoretti MP Denis Waweru, former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, Nominated MP Johnstone Sakaja, businesswoman Esther Pasaris and lawyer Miguna Miguna. Apart from Kidero and Miguna, the rest will fight for the Jubilee ticket.
