Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general Francis Atwoli has called for enactment of the law to allow for the nomination of members of the union to Parliament. He said their involvement in legislation matters in Parliament would ensure there is effective representation of workers in the country.

Atwoli told the joint select committee on Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission that political parties should not carry out the process. “We strongly recommend that the most representative workers federation should be granted the right to nominate the workers representatives to the National Assembly,” Atwoli said.

At the same time, he recommended that the electoral body be reconstituted to have the number of the commissioners reduced from nine to eight based on the now defunct provinces. Atwoli said the move would ensure all Kenyans are represented in the commission and enhance transparency during elections.

He said the new commissioners should operate on part-time basis with a renewable term of five years. Atwoli told the committee co-chaired by senators James Orengo and Kiraitu Murungi that the current commissioners should vacate office and new ones appointed to carry out the oversight function in public interest.
