More arrests were made yesterday on students accused of arson attacks in their respective secondary schools. This comes as education stakeholders struggled to unravel the mystery behind the frequent fires that have caused significant destruction.
Yesterday, 11 students from Mai Mahiu Boys’ High School in Naivasha were arrested following an attempt to burn the institution on Tuesday. Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner Isaac Masinde said there was minimal destruction, adding that key suspects were arrested and will be arraigned in court.
Meanwhile, a crisis meeting has been called at Kiambogo High School following the burning of two dormitories last week. A day after 13 students were charged in court, parents were called to seek ways of rebuilding new structures. Damages estimated to be worth Sh2.5 million.
In Thika, five students were arrested and held at police cells over an attempted unrest and possible arson at Chania Boys’ High School. The school principal Peter Kariuki said one of the watchmen noticed some students suspiciously walking towards one of the dormitories at around 3am Thursday night and alerted him.
And in Kisii Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers executive secretary Albert Omari opposed the merging of examination centres, saying it will affect candidates psychologically. He urged government to close schools early to allow students to get guidance and counseling over the arson.
