Former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has supported a proposed bill to re-introduce corporal punishment in schools, saying it is a perfect way of instilling discipline in learners. She attributed the rampant cases of arson attacks in schools to lack of discipline and strict mannerism among learners.

Speaking last week when she accompanied Mathare MP Stephen Kariuki to distribute bursaries in Huruma, Wanjiru said the country’s future “is at stake” if schools unrest is not checked. She said there is need for parents to also spare time to spend with their children aside busy schedules to instil in them virtues.

“The cases could be less if parents got concerned of their children’s welfare. If a parent has not raised a child during teenage years, then there is no need of priding that one has a child. It in secondary school age that children start understanding themselves,” said Wanjiru.

Re-introduction of caning and corporal punishment in schools, she said, would ensure students are accountable for their actions. Meanwhile, Kariuki called for speedy investigations into the arson attacks that have paralysed learning in various schools across the country.
