A pastor at African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Nakuru is nursing head injuries after two warring factions turned the church into a battle ground due to leadership wrangles.
The church service at AIPCA Kwa Murogi in Free Area was disrupted as some members attacked each other with batons and metal bars. The fight was between supporters of Bishop Peter Muiruri, who is in charge of Nakuru East Diocese and another one supporting Bishop Naftaly Thuku, who claims leadership of the same diocese.
Bishop Muiruri’s supporters are said to have invaded the church as Bishop Thuku was conducting service triggering a fight that saw the bishop’s lobes burnt. Some doors and windows of a nursery school located within the church compound were destroyed.
Police were called in to restore order where they arrested two people. Thuku accused Bishop Muiruri of forcefully assuming office without following the right procedure.
“The Church’s top leadership led by Archbishop Amos Kabuthu is at fault for imposing leaders against the wishes of the faithful and that is the root cause of the fights. We were attacked by youth with crude weapons and they managed to injure a clergy and also burn clergy’s lobes,” he said.
But on his part, Muiruri said that he was installed as the Bishop of Nakuru diocese vide a letter dated July 19, 2016. He said that he will remain in office until the church headquarters directs otherwise.
