Tuk tuk operators in Thika have been urged to go to driving schools and obtain licences to be compliant with the law. Thika West police boss Erastus Muthamia advised the operators to obtain the BCE level at the driving school which covers all classes of motor vehicles.
This is after some operators expressed confusion on the category of motor vehicles under which the three wheelers fall. Simon Kariuki, a local tuk tuk operator, said there is no driving school which trains tuk tuk operators and thus, it is hard for them to get licences.
Kariuki said the operators and the traffic police officers are always at logger heads because of the confusion as the law enforcers demand licences which they don’t have.
“We are always harassed by the police, most of us were previously boda boda operators and when we produce our motorcycle licences we are told that we don't have the right licence,” said Kariuki. Muthamia urged all the Tuk tuk operators to obtain valid road licences in addition to an insurance cover.
Speaking to KNA in his office Friday, the police boss insisted that all Tuk tuks should be taken to inspection units to get an inspection sticker. He also urged the drivers to be cautious while on the roads to reduce accidents.
