Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has told Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau to surrender to the police over the Tuesday burning of the area Administration Police camp.
Speaking Friday when he toured the ultra-modern national Police Forensic Laboratory at Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Kiambu Road, Nairobi, Boinnet said they are hopeful of concluding investigations within the 14 days the court gave over the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.
He however, maintained that the MP must come out from his hiding and present himself to the police to clear his name over the torching of the AP camp. On Tuesday, angry protesters, mainly boda boda operators, stormed the camp, where the three were said to have been last held and set a blaze the container in which they were believed to have been detained.
Their decomposing bodies were days later found in a river kilometres from the police post. Police have linked Makau to the arson attack claiming he led the protesters who burnt the container.
“What the MP did was wrong, he should immediately surrender himself to police as soon as possible,” said the police boss. By Friday, detectives were on hot pursuit of the MP and a number of his handlers with less success. His phone was also switched off.
Meanwhile, Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) has condemned the torching of the Syokimau Administration Police Post by protestors who linked the facility to the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and taxi driver.
The association also expressed concerns that vital evidence that could help in the unraveling of those who engineered the murder have been lost in the process. KARA chief executive officer Henry Ochieng' also raised alarm over the return of insecurity in the area.
“We are concerned that the resulting interruption of operations at the police post will greatly compromise the security situation in Syokimau area. Since the establishment of the post through the efforts of Syokimau Residents Association, the security in the area has greatly improved,” said Ochieng'.
“It is surprising that even after the police post was declared a crime scene, adequate measures were not put in place by the police to properly secure the scene and prevent any interference.
There is a likelihood that the burning of the station is part of a wider scheme to tamper with evidence that could lead to conviction of those behind the murder of the three,” he added. The association demanded for a thorough investigation to determine the real motive and the individuals behind the burning of the police post.
