Mombasa county has been placed on high terror alert following an advisory from the local Security and Intelligence Committee.
Speaking when he received Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Issack Hassan, County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim said the county security apparatus is on high alert to deal with any terrorist attack. In view of this, the police have called for cooperation from the public in the fight against terrorism and other violent crimes.
He said police have been asked to strictly check vehicles, vital installations, religious places, shopping malls, Kenya Ferry Services, Moi International Airport and tourist hotels.
Maalim said police officers will remain vigilant as they seek to protect citizens and visitors against any threats including terrorism. “We are on high alert and have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents and visitors,” said Maalim, who is the chairman of the County Security and Intelligence Committee.
Maalim warned criminal gangs at the Coast region including Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), Wakali Wao, Wakali Kwanza, terrorist affiliated groups and their sympathisers that their days are numbered.
The region has suffered from a string of bomb and grenade attacks, killing dozens in the last few years. Most incidents have targeted public venues such as churches, nightclubs, and bus stations.
As a result of the violence and subsequent travel advisories, tourist numbers have dropped significantly according to the Kenya Tourism Board.
