A social worker charged with stealing Sh270,000 from Pangani Police Station has been jailed for three years on a plea of own guilt. Milimani Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo heard that Oliver Wanyama unlocked a safe belonging to Pangani Police Station on April 12, 2016 and stole the money.

The Prosecution told the court that on the said date, the Officer Commanding Station Pangani, Chief Inspector Benjamin Kisela was in his office attending to his clients when Wanyama, who was tasked with cleaning station offices and maintaining flower-beds, entered into the OCS’s office and subsequently stole a bunch of keys belonging to the OCS.

Later, when the OCS wanted to leave the office to attend a meeting at Kamukunji DO’s office, he could not trace his bunch of keys containing the main office door and the safe key. He requested a Police Constable Ms Karimi for the duplicate key, which he was given and locked his office and returned back the keys to the said officer as he proceeded for the meeting.

“Immediately the OCS left the office, Wanyama approached officer Karimi and requested her for the keys to the OCS office and since it was normal for him to clean the office, he was given the keys,” said the prosecution while reading the facts.

The court heard that when the OCS came back to the office and searched for the bunch of keys and could not find them, he tried to reach the cleaner through his mobile phone but he declined to pick the calls. The OCS reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and when the investigations commenced, it was established that Wanyama was on the Nairobi-Eldoret highway heading to his rural home in Webuye.

Police pursued him up to Bungoma where he was arrested in his hideout and recovered Sh 270,000. On April 15, the OCS consolidated his cash records and found that indeed the suspect had stolen equivalent amount of Sh 270,000. Wanyama broke into tears pleading with the OCS to forgive him.

Magistrate Ogembo slapped him with a custodial sentence of three years noting that Wanyama was very reckless in his actions. He said the accused person took the keys and the money all the way to Webuye leaving many people suffering.
