Only a week after the government released Sh1 billion to finalise resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), some of them are worried about the impending closure of their camps.
Speaking to People Daily on Saturday, some of the displaced persons at Canaan Shalom IDP Camp at Wiyumiririe village, in Laikipia County said that the government had ignored their plight for many years.
The IDPs claim that their names were removed from the list of persons entitled for resettlement by the government.
Abject poverty
Initially, the camp hosted 9,223 families but 17 of them were locked out of the resettlement programme.
Jane Wanjiru, a mother of four, said that they have undergone many challenges in the camp and wondered whether they will benefit from the Sh1 billion.
“We recently saw our colleagues pocketing Sh200,000 from the government. Day by day, we watch at this highway, anticipating to be rescued from abject poverty,” said Wanjiru.
IDPs’ national chairman Peter Kariuki cited corruption at the directorate of Special Programmes in the implementation of resettlement process.
