Power cut leaves 1.2m locals thirsty in Kilifi.

More than 1.2 million residents in Kilifi county have been going without water for two weeks following the disconnection by the Coast Water Services Board (CWSB) over a Sh364 million debt.

The Kilifi/Mariakani Water and Sanitation Company (KIMAWASCO) reportedly owes the CWSB more than Sh196 million while the Malindi Water and Sanitation Company (MWSCO) owes it more than Sh168 million.

Speaking to the press in his office in Kilifi town, the Water executive Kiringi Mwachitu said the water shortage problem will be solved soon as the county government which has been reluctant to pay the bills has written to the CWSB promising to clear the outstanding debt.

“We have agreed to pay the outstanding water bill for the two companies and we have planned to pay by Sh30 million installments,” he said.

Kilifi town residents who talked to the press over the water problem termed the shortage as a permanent sore and called upon the county and national governments to look for a lasting solution.
