AFC Leopards are between a rock and a hard place following the mind-boggling conditions set by betting firm SportPesa in regards to offering the team a sponsorship deal.
SportPesa, which is also the official title sponsor of the Kenyan Premier League, have allegedly told Leopards to do away with the current technical bench and accept that the betting firm hire their own accountant to audit the cash that will trickle into the team after the deal.
There is a tug-of war to clinch the shirt sponsorship rights of the team between another sports betting firm Betway and SportPesa with reports emerging that the latter met a section of the club officials.
Leopards secretary Maurice Osundwa claims Betway have pledged Sh30 million in sponsorship for three years which will be extended on mutual agreement with a 10 per cent annual increase, while SportPesa are ready to dole out a similar amount for a five-year period but with strings attached.
The impeding deal came even after reports emerged that SportPesa met some Leopards officials and agreed the deal while others who were not consulted described the deal as a sham.
But Osundwa pointed out that while the Betway deal has almost been sealed, its foolhardy for SportPesa to try to micro-manage Leopards with conditions that might hurt the club in as much it needs finances.
“I find this unacceptable and also wonder why SportPesa has suddenly expressed interest when they kept quiet when we had been going round with begging bowls,” Osundwa posed.
