Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has assured that the Form One selection exercise, which will commence on January 21, will be done fairly so that no pupil is denied admission to public schools.
The CS said merit, quota allocations, equity, affirmative action and student choice will be the overriding factors to be considered during the selection exercise.
He said the ministry has revised the 2016 Form One admission guidelines after seeking views of education stakeholders, adding that the county education boards will ensure that no child is denied admission in a public school and that no levies should be charged for admission or tests administered to such children seeking admission.
Matiang’i made the remarks even as he said he would meet the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) next Tuesday to discuss the issues and concerns they have raised on this subject.
Access to education But even as he invited KPSA, the CS was categorical that the discussion will be based on circumstances of honesty and will be paying attention to the fact that equity and access to education are key in the sector, adding that everyone has a right to access it.
“We are not going to be pushed or politicised in making decisions that should be made otherwise but we are ready to listen. We are going to sit round the table and look at the facts as they are and look for solutions but we must understand that things are not right because we want them to happen the way we want them to, we must build consensus,” said the CS.
