Lucky escape for woman raped, ran over by train.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has promised that his government will clear a Sh2 million hospital bill incurred by a woman who lost her limbs at Kibarani when she was run over by a train after she was gang raped.

“We were elected by the people and where such unfortunate incidents occur, we need to see to it that they don’t suffer in silence,” said the Governor when he visited the woman at the at the Aga Khan hospital.

The mother of two was first raped, hacked with a panga and abandoned on the railway where a train severed her limbs. The suspects, who are said to be familiar to her, are still at large a month after the incident which sparked public outrage.

Joho, who was accompanied by County Women's Representative Mishi Mboko and MPs Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni) and Badi Twalib (Jomvu), promised to do all it takes to ensure the woman gets justice.

The leaders promised to raise Sh100,000 each for business capital and a decent house to ensure she lives a better life. A week ago, women and human rights lobby groups in Mombasa staged a demonstration in Kibarani to pile pressure on the police to arrest the suspects.

Government mulls devolving KBC to counties

The government is considering devolving state-run Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) services to help county governments better drive their development agenda.

Broadcasting and Telecommunications PS Samuel Itemere said, besides having well trained personnel, KBC has a wider coverage with the radio having more than 17 vernacular channels that could benefit the 47 counties.

Speaking at the 4th Annual devolution conference in Naivasha, the PS, however, expressed concern over sustainability challenges citing requirements of 40 per cent local content, which he said, would be expensive for counties.

Itemere said county governments, in collaboration with the inter-governmental agencies, were working on modalities of finding the best way of using the media to promote development agenda at the county level.

On the internet, the PS said county governments had contributed to delays in connecting the counties by heavily taxing companies laying the fiber optic cable infrastructure.

During the forum, Trans-Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba accused the media of depicting devolution as a failure by only highlighting infighting over funds and ignoring success stories.

However, Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Francis ole Kaparo defended the media saying infighting among governors and MCAs was a cause for concern, and told governors to change if they want the media to portray them positively. --KNA

Police in Murang’a accompanied by officers from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Friday destroyed 7,500 litres of ethanol that had been intercepted while on transit on Kenol-Sagana road two years ago.

The officers were acting on a court order that directed that the chemical worth Sh7 million be destroyed. With the help of inmates from Murang’a prisons, the ethanol stocked in thirty 250-litre plastic drums, was emptied in a sewer at Karie area near Murang’a town.

Officers from the National Environment Management Authority also supervised the exercise to ensure the chemical did not pose a risk to the environment.

Last week, a Nairobi court gave the order after it found two people, who were arrested in connection with the chemical, guilty. In 2015, officers from the flying squad seized the ethanol, for which duty had not been paid, while it was being transported to Nanyuki.

Murang’a south Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia who oversaw destruction of the chemical, said it was meant to be used to manufacture second generation brews.

Two years ago, President Kenyatta issued a directive for destruction of second generation brews citing its adverse effects on young people. The President’s directive saw more than two million litres of the killer brews be destroyed in Murang’a county within two months.

The government has set aside Sh154 million towards the school feeding programme in areas experiencing drought.

Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i said the money was meant to cushion learners from famine-stricken counties. He said the government would partner with the National Youth Service to distribute the food.

Speaking at Tumaini Primary School in Nyandarua County on Thursday, Matiang’i said the ministry will publish names of schools which will benefit.

“We have agreed to intensify our school feeding programme using money from the drought relief programme of the government,” he said.

He also banned annual leave for education officers in affected areas to enable them to monitor the situation and oversee food distribution.

Matiang'i urged teachers to be compassionate and refrain from sending pupils home for school fees, saying parents were also hard hit.

“I am pleading with teachers in drought hit counties to refrain from sending students away because of lack of school fees,” he said.

Narok lands

Roy Lumbe @lumbe_roy

The Environment and Lands Court in Nakuru Friday blocked the National Land Commission (NLC) from sub-dividing a multi-billion-shilling ranch in Naivasha until a suit filed in court is heard and determined.

Kedong Ranch owners, through lawyer Robert Ndumbi, moved to court accusing the District Lands office of colluding with Fredswoods Company to subdivide its 28,285 hectares land in Naivasha.

According to Ndumbi, his clients had surrendered the original title to the Land Registry to enable the commission to subdivide the land into eight portions after they had agreed to sell part of it to the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) only to find out Fredswoods was claiming ownership of the land.

"My clients had agreed to sell part of the land to a power generating company and they surrendered the title to the Lands office to allow the land to be subdivided.

We were shocked when Fredswoods Company started subdividing the land claiming ownership," he said. Appearing before Lands court judge Justice Dalmas Ohungo, Ndumbi urged the court to stop the subdivision of the land by Fredswoods on grounds that it wants to acquire it illegally.

Kedong Ranch owners have sued Fredswoods company together with the Lands Registrar's office of fraud accusing them of colluding to sell part of the ranch illegally.

The court heard that the company has been selling land and issuing titles to members of the public yet they are not the owners.
In his ruling Justice Ohungo stopped issuance of title deeds and directed the NLC to revoke all titles already issued until the matter filed in court is heard and determined.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga left for South Africa Friday to visit his daughter, Rosemary, who is recuperating after she was admitted to a hospital in the country two weeks ago.

Raila, who suffered food poisoning early this week and was admitted overnight to the Karen Hospital, left Nairobi shortly after 7am Friday morning aboard a Kenya Airways.

His spokesman Dennis Onyango said in a statement that Raila will be out of the country for more than a week. From South Africa, he is expected to fly to the US for some engagements.

Rosemary, who has declared intentions to run for the Kibra parliamentary seat, was flown to South Africa for further treatment days after she was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

She was accompanied by her mother, Ida Odinga. Before he left for South Africa, the ODM leader thanked Kenyans for their best wishes following his hospitalisation.

“Your prayers worked. I wish to assure everyone that I am fully recovered and ready to hit the road again. We thank God for that…

It was a case of food poisoning, which is not the same thing as being poisoned. I know many Kenyans encounter this problem from time to time.

It can cause quite a scare and indeed it did to me,” he said in a thank-you note posted on social media. The former Prime Minister is expected to make a fourth stab at the presidency in the August General Election.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged Kenyans to reject politicians spreading hatred and inciting them to violence. The President said firm action would be taken against those who have vested interests in sparking fear, panic and reckless rhetoric.

He said the country had made significant progress since the 2017 post-election violence and asked Kenyans to be vigilant to avoid a recurrence.

“Tragically, we have a history replete with scenes, which, in a democratic process should be a cause for celebration but degenerate into deathly violence,” said the Head of State.

He was speaking during the passing out parade of 1,991 General Service Unit police constables at the GSU Training School, Embakasi.

He urged the recruits to be non-partisan in discharging their duties and to stand firm against profiteers of violence. “Soon you will be deployed across the country to diffuse tense situations.

There are several places with rogue elements and you will be called upon to serve in operations in such areas,” the President said.

Uhuru said the Jubilee administration had instituted several reforms including provision of police health insurance, modern housing and modernisation of police equipment and tooling to improve the welfare of officers and enhance service delivery.

The President said stability and security must be ensured for both local and foreign investors during the electioneering period.

Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General Joseph Boinnet also challenged the officers to uphold professionalism in discharging their mandate.

Others present were Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, Deputy Inspector General Joel Kitili, National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman Johnstone Kavuludi and GSU Commandant Stephen Chelimo.

The President presented awards to the best recruits including the Marksman Badge to Erick Mwirigi Riungu who scored the best rifle shot.

Also awarded were the three best all-round recruits Felix Kipkirui Kiplimo of Green Company, Douglas Okumu Simiyu of Yellow Company and Geoffrey Walongo of Blue Company.

The perennial cycle of drought has once again come to haunt the arid area of Turkana County where the food security situation has grown from worse to dire.

And although, the Government and aid organizations have been making efforts to supply affected families with relief food, that has not been enough.

K24 has established that many families are suffering from malnutrition after their livestock, which was their main means of survival were wiped out by the ravaging drought.

Dennis Matara spent the day in Turkana and tells us how one of the affected families in Lodwar town has literally decided to lease out two of their six children to a businessman to cater for their food needs as they helplessly stare at the preserved skins of their goats which were wiped out by the drought take a look.

Two politicians from Baringo County who were last month shot dead in cold blood by unknown assailants were Friday buried in an emotional ceremony which was characterized by a heavy security presence.

At one point the burial of Tiaty constituency aspirant Simon Pepee Kitambaa and Fredrick Kibet Cheretei almost turned chaotic after a survivor of the attack narrated the ordeal but failed to reveal the contents of a text message supposedly sent by those behind the attack.
Leaders who attended the ceremony, pointed an accused a prominent politician from the area saying the murder was politically motivated.

Fun in flamingo land

Lake Nakuru National Park is a must visit if you are in Nakuru. The lake, dotted with pink tones of flamingoes, is a sight to behold.

The search for a nice mini holiday destination can be a task sometimes, as I recently discovered while we were hunting for good places for a friend’s birthday. We ended up with Nakuru, but we had to narrow down to somewhere with a different experience; a place that was seemingly untouched and was not “Nairobinised” as the town centre of Nakuru is.

We arrived in Nakuru town quite late on a Friday night, and grabbed an Uber to Kivu Resort, which was a 10-minute ride. The reception area was African themed, with portraits and carvings on the walls.

The good thing is that one can do a walk-in, and they also take cash, so we secured a room shortly after arriving. The cottages are hut-like in shape, and also African-themed, with the beds dressed in red and black Maasai shukas.

Dinner was served after an hour. We had fries and curry chicken, which was scrumptious, especially as we had been looking forward to munching something after the long drive from Nairobi.

On Saturday, we did not feel like an activity-packed day, so we just relaxed, mostly by the resort’s pool. It is quite big, and we mingled with a few locals who had come for a swim.

For lunch, we had Kenyan cuisine, comprising of beef curry and rice, which was as delicious as the chicken meal we’d had the night before. The same evening, we chose to sample the popular Nakuru nightlife that earns the town the moniker ‘Naxvegas’.

Our driver suggested we try out the Platinum 7D Lounge, located just as you get to the town from Nairobi. Let’s just say it felt like the Capital all over again. The partying there was real, with the place packed to the brim.

Kivu Resort is 100 metres from Lake Nakuru National Park, which is where we opted to visit the next morning. We arranged with the resort’s management for a tour of the park.

We set out immediately after breakfast, for the place that’s a must-visit if you are in Nakuru. The lake, dotted with pink tones of flamingoes as well as other birds such as herons and storks, is a sight to behold.

We stopped for bird viewing, before continuing with the drive. Most of what we spotted were giraffes and a few rhinos, a number of which the tour guide explained had been rescued from poachers.

There were also monkeys, which we spotted in the woodlands, and also gazelles and hippos in the lake. We wanted to see a lion or cheetah, but at midday, these elusive predators are hard to locate, and, we had to cut short the game drive, as we needed to head back to the city.

It costs Sh1,200 per person, but we were lucky to have our price cut by half, because we didn’t do the whole drive. I promised myself to be back soon. I have to complete that game drive, it was a great experience.

Dj TK spins the deck in advertising

King Kaka, Khetia.

Njeri Maina

Trushar Khetia’s name is among the 30 Forbes most promising Africans of the year 2016. He is one of the Top 40 under 40, a title he earned from being among top entrepreneurs in Kenya.

Alongside Caroline Mutoko and King Kaka, Khetia is a judge on “Be Your Own Boss”, a TV reality show that inculcates life skills in youth involved in entrepreneurship.

What many don’t know about him is that he was once the marketing manager at Securex at the tender age of 19 years. During the same period, he used to Deejay at Pavement club by night under the alias Dj TK.

Trushar is the chief executive officer of Tria Media, an advertising company in Kenya and Tanzania which deals with transit media. He started his company in 2013, after identifying the lack of transit media branding in the advertising market. Armed with a laptop, his phone and minimal capital, he pitched bus branding to different clients.

He would land Omo, as his first client. To brand buses from concept design, he says, to the actual plastering of branded sheets on the buses was the major cash drain. He had to invest all his savings into the business.

Luckily, within a year-and-a-half he had broken even. Being the proverbial jack of all trades, he would soon purchase loss-making Society Stores. The stores were rebranded and were making profits in a year.

Due to the demanding schedules of both his businesses, deejaying became a hobby playing at home so he wouldn’t lose the skill. He plays his decks at home to date.

PD Wikendi inquires what it takes to be a young millionaire. Is it special upbringing, luck or simply by fluke? ‘Neither’, the young Turk responds. ‘I was raised in Kitale.

I went to a day government primary school in Kitale and only came to Nairobi for my high school. I later went to Manchester Business School for my management degree with a Marketing specialty.

For me, it has always been about being the best I could be and keeping my eyes open for great opportunities while at it. I believe that I was the best video library guy, the best perfume sales guy and the best advertising guru.

It has always been about excelling at what I do and touching lives while at it,’ the Blaze BYOB Tv show judge expounds. Despite having two companies which function autonomously, mostly due to his policies which encourage employees to do their best and work as if they had no oversight, Trushar’s typical day is still quite hectic. Between personal work, and family life, his day starts quite early and ends quite late. He, however, insists on prioritising and delegating to avoid burnout.

The weekends are for his wife and family. This helps him remain grounded and rejuvenate. So, what’s next for Trushar Khetia? ‘I plan on expanding Tria Group to Uganda as well as opening up more Society Stores.

I am also on the lookout for great ventures that I could take part in while still being Dj TK. Who knows I might just play at my next entrepreneurial venture’s opening?’He concludes with a laugh.

Sharp sting of rare Uhuru, governors, Raila unity

Late Governor Gachagua funeral. Photo/File

The roundup this week starts in county 019, or Nyeri, if you stunk in math —like me. Hosting 38 of the 47 governors, half of the top government officials, Opposition chief Raila Odinga, retired President Mwai Kibaki and his sitting successor Uhuru Kenyatta, the county was bursting from the seems in opulence.

Indeed, as someone joked, if power had actual weight, Nyeri would be sitting metres below, having sunk from the sheer kilos. Besides the show of power that bordered on extravagance (18 helicopters in a village), the burial of the first Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua provided a platform for rare convergence between Raila and Uhuru Kenyatta, the man he is seeking to make jobless in August.

They hit out MCAs for making devolution harder than it should be to implement. This was apt considering the death of Gachagua’s is claimed to have been hastened by his unending wars with the members of his County Assembly.

And MCAs were not the only ones to get hit hard during the week. Doctors, who have been on strike for more than 90 days, found themselves staring at the bare-knuckled fist thrown by the combined might of a President and Council of Governors that had lost every ounce of patience.

While Kenyans empathised with the medics at the start of their industrial action, their refusal to consider a sizeable pay hike combined with a general feeling the strike had taken a political dimension has lost the medics Kenyans’ goodwill.

The fact that seasoned mediators including the chief unionist Francis Atwoli, KNCHR, LSK, and senior most clergy were unable to make the medics budge lend credence to the assumption the strike was being used for ulterior (read political) reasons.

And even as some doctors lost their jobs, the Opposition, sadly, continued to cheer them on, oblivious of the suffering ordinary Kenyans were facing. And, when Raila suffered food poisoning on Wednesday, he was promptly rushed to Karen Hospital where a team of doctors were at hand to wait on him.

He is fine now, but that did not stop some media outlets, including some reputable houses, probably out of mischief reporting that ODM leader ‘had been poisoned’.
