The blame game by Jubilee and Cord leaders over who fixed Deputy President William Ruto at the International Criminal Court ( ICC ) is not healthy for sustainable peace building in the country, a Catholic prelate has said.

Bishop Cornelius Korir of Eldoret diocese faulted the elite for re-opening old wound through reckless statements in public forums over the ICC issue saying their action was bound to ignite civil strife in the country if not checked.

He said the utterances made by the politicians from the Jubilee Alliance and Cord Coalition was a threat to existing peace and unity among people from different communities in the Rift Valley region which he said was the most hit by the post-election violence.

The clergy was speaking at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Eldoret after holding a three-hour meeting with elders from various Kalenjin sub-tribes on how to incorporate them in the peace building processes initiated by the Catholic Church in the region.

Korir who spearheaded the peace initiative among various communities in Rift Valley region during the post-election violence of 2008 expressed concern over the statements he termed “inciting” by leaders from Jubilee and Cord.

He said there was uncertainty and anxiety from various communities living in some parts of the Rift Valley region over what he termed as careless utterances by leaders from Jubilee attending prayer rallies for the DP and radio journalist Joshua Sang.

“Unless the leaders attending prayer rallies for DP and radio journalist check their tongue their statements are likely to open wound which had already recovered following the 2007/08 post-election violence.

Ruto and Sang are facing crime against humanity charges at the ICC over the post-election skirmishes in which 1,113 people were killed and nearly 600,000 uprooted from their homes with several business running into billions of shillings.
