Pwani University (PU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mohamed Rajab has appealed to the Kilifi county government to fast track the relocation of  the fast-growing Kibaoni trading centre which conducts business 24 hours a day and a bus park adjacent to the institution’s main gate as they pose a security risk to the university.

The VC said while PU is working closely with the county government and the security committee to ensure on-and-off campus security, he believes the trading centre along the busy Mombasa/Malindi highway is too small and unsustainable, yet it posses danger to pedestrians and motorists and is a security challenge to the college.

He added that the university is vigilant and continues to invest heavily in modern security practices and facilities. “We have contracted full security services ranging from guards, walk-through metal detectors, CCTV cameras, mobile patrols and emergency alarm response in all the major areas of the institution,” sad the VC.

Prof Rajab said more funding is required to boost security efforts in public universities across the country.  “Although our institution has put in place various security measures, it needs financial support from the national government to do more.

We want to make the university secure; we plan to relocate our main gate to a more secure area in the mean-time,” he said.  Speaking during the launch of Pwani University Alumni at the campus, the VC said currently, the institution has 35 accredited programmes, up from only 12 degree programmes in 2012.
