The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has appealed against the decision by a Nairobi court release a teacher accused of defiling a Form One student at Highridge Secondary School on bail.
In an affidavit filed yesterday, the DPP insists that Hillary Okeyo, who has denied committing the offense last Wednesday, is a flight risk. Through state lawyer Pauline Muthuri, the DPP wants the Biology teacher to remain behind bars pending trial.
The chief prosecutor is seeking to have the magistrates decision reviewed as the offence attracts a maximum of 20 years if found guilty.
The application by the DPP was lodged hours after chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo freed Okeyo on a bond of Sh2 million with a surety of similar amount or cash bail of Sh500,000. The case is due for hearing on November 24.
