PSCU President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to lobby his counterparts across the world to mobilise resources to fight cancer. Uhuru said cancer has caused more pain to many families as it has not only robbed them of their health but has also impoverished them.
“Cancer is a disease where there is little knowledge as to what can be done if you especially detect it early,” he said. The President was speaking on Monday evening at State House, Nairobi, during a dinner hosted by the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for visiting First Ladies and delegates attending the three-day continental conference on cancer.
Uhuru commended the First Ladies for their passion and zeal in creating awareness on the disease under their umbrella First Ladies Against Breast and Cervical Cancer, saying their efforts are worth praise and support.
“This evening we are here to celebrate some very wonderful strong willed and passionate women of this African continent who have taken on a course that is dear to many people across this continent of ours,” said the President.
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta underscored the need for stakeholders to join hands in the fight against cancer. She said her office, in collaboration with the Health ministry, will work with religious and community leaders as well as civil society organisations and the media to create public awareness on cancer.
“As chairperson of the Forum of Africa’s First Ladies and Spouses against Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer, I want to assure you of my commitment to lobby for adequate human, technical and financial resources,” the First Lady said.
She said the forum is an effective tool in the fight against the disease in the continent and expressed optimism saying technology advancement will help in achieving universal access to screening, treatment and care for cervical, breast and prostate cancer patients.
