A special security team has been set up in Kilifi county to ensure peace during Christmas and New Year festivities, County Commissioner Joseph Keter has said. The team was set up to specifically deal with criminal gangs—some with alleged links to politicians— that have been terrorising residents of Mtwapa and other parts of Kilifi South sub-county.
Already, three people have been killed in Junju location within a week. Speaking after addressing the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kharisa Maitha Stadium, Keter, who is the county security committee chairman, said a senior politician in the county has been linked with the Taliban group in Mtwapa, adding that he will be summoned to shed light on the allegations.
“The special security team will also track the movement of the politician to see if he has any connection with the terror gang known as Taliban in Mtwapa town,” he said. He also raised concern over the early campaigns that are raising political temperatures and threatening peace in the area.
He said his office was considering inviting the National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Francis ole Kaparo to the region to talk to local leaders.
“We do not want a repeat of what happened in the last General Election at Chumani Secondary School, Chonyi and Kinarani where a suspected group of Mombasa Republican Council members killed security officers and burnt a government vehicle,” he said warning politicians to encourage peace.
He appealed to the Wamakonde, Bajuni and Wapemba communities who have been living in the county to register to get national identity cards saying about 300 have already been registered and issued with documents. He, however, raised concern people were not collecting the vital document after registration with more than 4,500 ready IDs lying at the chiefs’ offices around the county.
Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, who arrived late for the celebration accused the National government of fighting him using the corruption in the county for allegedly snubbing overtures to join Jubilee Party, adding that he is in ODM to stay.
