Ward Representatives affiliated to Jubilee Party in Nairobi county have threatened to mobilise city residents to boycott paying taxes over graft.
Led by Minority Leader in the County Assembly Abdi Guyo, they accused senior officials at the county of embezzling funds set aside for paying contractors and suppliers.
The Members of County Assembly petitioned Speaker Alex Magelo to convene a special sitting today to discuss the Auditor General’s report on alleged misappropriation of Sh20 billion.
“The figure quoted by the Edward Ouko report is just a tip of the iceberg. The county government has misused about Sh50 billion for the last three years,”he claimed. Speaking at City Hall, he claimed the money being siphoned from the county coffers is being used to fund former Prime Minister Raila Odinga campaigns in the country.
Ouko says he is unable to determine the “accuracy and validity” of Sh11.4 billion which is listed under revenue receipts and which was illegally banked in the county’s bank account and not transferred to the County Revenue Fund Account, where all monies received by the unit are supposed to be deposited.
Meanwhile, Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) chairman Micah Cheserem has asked Ouko to be stating the exact amounts of money lost in his audit instead of “generalising suspected flaws”.
He said it is illogical for the county to misappropriate Sh20 billion from a budget of Sh23 billion in 2014/15 fiscal year.
