Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was yesterday grilled by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives for over seven hours over questionable expenditures at the county amounting to Sh402 million.
Key among the controversial payments is the contested purchase of 11-acre Mtwapa Bus Park and market land at a cost of Sh308 million. Kingi was also put to task to explain how Sh51million was mysterious siphoned from the county Treasury through the Information Financial Management System (Ifmis) and the disputed payment of Sh34 million to two suppliers.
“The investigation is aimed at establishing the actual amount lost in the county,” said a senior EACC official. The governor was accompanied by his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho, Siaya Senator James Orengo and MPs Junet Mohamed (Suna East), Irshad Sumra (Embakasi South) and Aisha Jumwa (Kilifi Women’s Representative).
Kingi’s supporters also camped at the EACC Integrity Centre headquarters when he was being grilled, with Mombasa Women’s Representative Mishi Mboko and Cord leader Raila Odinga’s daughter, Rosemary, showing up later in the day.
Kingi last week said he was only a whistle-blower, not a suspect in the scam. “I am the one who walked into EACC and told them to investigate. The procedure is the complainant is the first person to make a statement and that’s why I’ll be reporting at EACC,” he said.
Last Friday, the Kilifi county government obtained court orders compelling the National government to freeze assets and accounts of companies alleged to have illegally received the county cash. The companies include Daima One Enterprises, Leadership Edge Associates, Kilingi Investment, Makegra Supplies and Zohali Supplies.
