The face-off between politicians in Meru region took a dramatic turn yesterday after Deputy President William Ruto warned Meru Governor Peter Munya he could be probed over graft allegations. Ruto told Munya that he would not escape the government’s dragnet if he has been involved in any misuse of public funds.
“I am telling Munya as he goes around launching his party here, we are coming for him if he is involved in any corruption,” he said. The Deputy President made the remarks after Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi and other area lawmakers accused the county boss of using millions of shillings to fund campaigns for his Party of National Unity (PNU) outfit.
“All county spending will be investigated and anybody found guilty will be jailed for very many years,”warned the DP at Kaaga Methodist Church during a funds drive.
He was accompanied by Senator Murungi, MPs Mithika Linturi (Igembe South), Rahim Dawood (Imenti North ), Kathuri Murungi (Imenti South) Mwiti Irea (Imenti Central), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), Joseph M’Eruaki (Igembe North), Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Central) and Meru Women’s Representative Florence Kajuju.
The group has been facing off with a defiant Munya, who last month defied calls to join Jubilee Party and went ahead to relaunch PNU. Ruto asked the anti-graft agency to move with speed and ensure those named in corruption scandals are prosecuted in a court of law.
“Those who have embezzled public funds will be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,” he added. Ruto also questioned Cord leader Raila Odinga’s zeal to fight corruption when he is the biggest culprit in the country where ODM governors are collaborating with him to steal from public coffers.
He accused the former premier of spreading propaganda about failure of Jubilee to fight corruption and wondered why he is so vocal on graft while he is condoning it in the Opposition.
“There is misuse of funds at the counties and we ask the government to take stern action against those responsible,” said Linturi. Kiraitu dared Munya to take him to court, claiming he has evidence of transactions of Sh1.4 million paid for printing of party branded T-shirts.
Kiraitu claimed public money was used to mobilise youth to cheer Peter Munya. “We want proper investigations done on misuse of public resources especially in this county to fund PNU activities,” said Kiraitu.
Elsewhere, Ruto said the appointment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not affect the preparations for next year’s General Election. He allayed fears that the appointment process of new IEBC commissioners might result in the postponement of next year’s elections and asked those spreading propaganda that next year’s General Election will be delayed to stop misleading Kenyans.
“Some people have woken up to the reality that they are not ready for next year’s General Election and that is why they are causing panic and confusion among Kenyans,” said Ruto. The Deputy President made the remarks at the African Gospel Church Keringet, Kuresoi South Constituency, Nakuru county on Sunday where he attended a church service.
