The government has now launched the annual anti-gender discrimination campaign dabbed sixteen days of activism, that is aimed at creating awareness about the rights of the girl child, especially those in cultures with a high prevalence of early marriage and female genital mutilation.
Youth and gender affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki who graced the colourful national event held at Enkorika village in Kajiado county warned of stern action to be taken against communities exposing the girl child to risks of death resulting from the cut, and worse still marrying them off at a tender age.
This came as more than fifty female circumcisers drawn from Kajiado, Narok and Samburu counties downed their brutal and unforgiving circumcision tools, marking the beginning of an end to decades of the age old culture of female genital mutilation.
