KDF

State House has condemned the latest attempt to link the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with illicit charcoal trade in Somalia.

Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said yesterday the reports are regurgitation of claims by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) over time, aimed at demoralising the troops.

He said Kenya is focused on the job that took the forces there and will not be distracted by the latest hogwash masquerading as research.

“We have seen media reports today linking the KDF to illicit charcoal trade in Somalia. The reports quote a United Nations (UN) report, which itself quotes faceless people and NGOs,” he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed’s push to lead the African Union Commission is still in progress with Kenyan ambassadors and high commissioners recalled for a briefing on Kenya’s approach to lobbying for the post and to strategise on the next steps ahead of the late January vote and decision.

During the event, a delegation from Somalia announced it had publicly offered its vote to the CS, making it the first country to do so.

“In the coming weeks, Amb. Mohamed herself, as well as colleagues in cabinet that are members of the sub-committee supporting her candidature, will fan across the continent as special envoys to campaign for the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs,” Esipisu said.

President Kenyatta is expected to continue consulting his colleagues directly as he seeks consensus on the candidature.
