President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday congratulated the joint medical team which conducted a successful surgery that separated two-year-old conjoined twins.

The twins, who were conjoined at the hip, were operated on by a team of more than 50 specialists from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and University of Nairobi’s School of Health Sciences.

In a statement to newsrooms yesterday, the President also wished the twin girls a quick convalescence. He thanked the medical team for the outstanding work, dedication and a great sense of civic duty.

The 23-hour successful surgery, conducted at KNH main theatre, was a first in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa. “It is a testimony of the vast improvement in the quality and capacity of healthcare facilities and services available in Kenya’s Public Hospitals,” said the Head of State.

“The joy of the mother, relatives and family friends of the girls is shared by the whole Nation and beyond.” The children have been admitted in hospital’s special ward for over two years to allow development of key organs.
