The government has announced plans to get free medical insurance cover for vulnerable Kenyans under the social welfare protection programme.
Speaking in Voi yesterday, Health Cabinet secretary Cleopha Mailu said the government will administer the scheme through the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) targeting the vulnerable groups in the society, particularly the aged.
He said the elaborate medical scheme was primarily meant to cushion the poor from the high cost of medical services and enhance their access to quality health services in public and selected mission hospitals.
The new scheme is an extension of the government’s free maternity, which will now be administered through the NHIF. “We are extending the medical scheme to household level where all those under social protection will be brought on board,” he said.
