Ganze MP, Peter Safari has appealed for humanitarian assistance for his constituents who he said are suffering the effects of persistent drought, as long-term solutions are sought. He said the situation is worsening by the day, saying residents are going hungry and losing livestock because all watering points have dried up.
Although the National government has been on the ground providing assistance, Safari said more aid is urgently required. He said the current 800 bags of relief food they receive monthly is inadequate for the more than 160,000 residents.
Ganze has suffered poor rains close to three years, a situation that has been blamed for the drought that is ravaging the area. “We are appealing to well-wishers to assist before the situation gets out of hand.
Residents are suffering,” said Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, who visited the area last month and distributed relief food, assured that the government was working on a lasting solution to address the famine. He said at least four boreholes will be sunk, saying they will help in initiating subsistence farming through irrigation.
