ntsa new crackdown

By Phenny Ongalo

Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to involve them in key decision-making processes.

The lobby’s coordinator Albert Karagacha was concerned that the transport authority is developing and implementing regulations and laws without informing them.

Karagacha said for the road safety measures to take shape and avert the increasing accident occurrences, players in the industry must be put in the loop.

At the same time, he said NTSA has been criminalising the entire sacco whenever a vehicle belonging to group is impounded.

Faulting saccos

“If a vehicle belonging to Mombasa Matatu Sacco is impounded for speeding, instead of the driver and the owner of the vehicle being held responsible, NTSA will ensure all matatus belonging to the sacco are faulted,” said Karagacha.

He also faulted NTSA for “failing to perform their mandate” only to appear after an accident happens.

Additionally, Karagacha urged the government to facilitate the process of professionalising the sector.  He said just like security firms where companies and individuals source for guards at a fee, the transport sector should be encouraged to put in place such.

“This will not only bring sanity to the sector but ensure accountability and monitoring of the drivers and the vehicles,” he said.
