Gloom shadows the lives of eight school boys aged between eight and 15 in Murang’a county following revelations that they had been preyed upon by a sex pest, a 38-year-old man said to be HIV positive.
Police in Murang’a confirmed that the suspect (name withheld) who has been sodomising the minors has turned out to be HIV positive following tests. An officer who declined to be identified since he is not authorised speak to the media said the suspect was examined at Maragua District Hospital. This unraveled after one of the victims sought medical attention only to test HIV positive too. “He gave me money and sent me to the nearby shop to purchase a petroleum jelly.
I obeyed and purchased it but when I returned to his house, he smeared it in my back and sodomized me. I was taken to hospital where I tested HIV positive,” said one of the boys as tears trickled down his cheeks. He said that the man threatened him not to reveal what had transpired, adding that he has been luring his victims with money.
The boy further revealed that the man had threatened to hack him to death if he disclosed what he had done to him. Residents of Igikiro village in Kamahuha, Makuyu sub-county who were shell-shocked by the heinous incident were about to set upon the culprit last Saturday, but he was rescued by police officers who whisked him away and locked him up at the Saba Saba Police Station.
The suspect’s activities surfaced when the headteacher of a 14-year-old pupil responded to concerns by the boy’s class teacher who noted the lads predicament and asked some of the school committee members to accompany him to a health facility where, upon examination, it was discovered that his rectum had lacerations, consistent with anal penetration.
He was taken to Maragua Level 4 Hospital, where the doctors, after tests, delivered the chilling information to the school authorities. But the sordid matter did not end there. Following further interrogation, it was discovered that seven more boys had been subjected to molestation by the suspect.
One of the teachers who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter said the victims subsequently revealed the identity of the sex pest and proceeded to take them to the man’s house. The mother of one the victims lamented that the suspect had destroyed the life of his son and demanded justice be done for him.
“My son’s life has been turned upside down by that beast. The whole village is now worried about the fate of its children,” said the mother as residents demanded that the police thoroughly probe the matter. “Right now, eight of his victims have been taken for medical examination and we are awaiting the results of seven of them as this particular case has been confirmed by the doctors,” said a resident.
The irate locals claimed the man had previously been arrested by members of the public and frog-marched to the same police station but was allegedly released without being charged and that he assaulted another child upon his release. Police yesterday assured that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect is expected to be arraigned in Kigumo courts today.
