KNCHR starts probe into extrajudicial executions

Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has started a public inquiry into about 300 cases of extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, torture and other human rights violation reported at the Coast in the past three years.

KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori said the commission will conduct the inquiry beginning next month in Mombasa, Tana River, Kwale and Lamu counties where most of the cases have been reported.

She said the commission’s investigations into security issues at the Coast “point to worrying trends of loss of lives at the hands of terrorists, continued cases of extra-judicial killings and arbitrary arrests, forcible transfers of vulnerable populations and massive destruction of property.”

Addressing the press in Mombasa yesterday, Mbogori said as a result the commission will seeks to analyse the human rights impacts of insecurity in the mentioned areas.

The inquiry will have public hearings where residents will give their experience on insecurity cases before the commission, which will be documented then reports and recommendations on the steps to secure appropriate redress made.
