The National Delegates Conference of the various parties that dissolved to form Jubilee Party inadvertently showed the big divide between the two bigger parties TNA and URP and the rest.
While the merger process for TNA and URP was held at the colourful and spacious Kasarani indoor stadium, the Amphitheater in shifts, GNU, Ford People and TIP held theirs in tents erected outside the amphitheater.
Organisers said this was due to the number of attending delegates and indeed, URP and TNA were allocated the lion’s share. At Kalembe Ndile’s TIP tent, the delegates finished their business in record time and in his characteristic humorous nature, the former Kibwezi MP claimed the party constitution allowed the party to be dissolved even by 150 delegates.
He also let the delegates know he is pursuing a degree course in Business Administration and encouraged others to do so. “I don’t like bragging but I want to encourage those without degrees to do so because it is not difficult,” he said to the amusement of the delegates.
More discerningly, while TNA party had the most colourful process complete with entertainment from two local gospel singers Solomon Mkubwa and Gloria Muliro, the other parties rushed through the process hurriedly without any kind of entertainment. Elizabeth Moraa from Tana River also entertained the crowd with a poem.
While Kiambu governor William Kabogo received a rousing reception when he stood to speak, efforts by some delegates to have Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, who joined the convention late, speak were unheeded by the officials.
But the biggest applause went to Turkana South MP James Lomenen when he claimed that “Uhuru Kenyatta is the only President supported even by the National Anthem”. He then led the delegates to sing “Natukae na Uhuru” verse.
The grand party was concluded by a moving speech by the outgoing TNA Chairman Johnson Sakaja who took the delegates through the path the party has taken since inception until now and how it has surmounted the many challenges.
