A group of MPs led by Kiharu legislator Irungu Kang’ata is planning to disrupt US President Barack Obama’s address to Parliament if he touches on the thorny gay agenda.
Kang’ata yesterday told People Daily that already 110 of his colleagues have expressed desire to protest over the same, and even picket outside the Chamber’s entrance.
The MP also disclosed that he will today lead his colleagues in presenting a protest letter to the US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec. “We have already drafted a protest note to be presented to the ambassador which is simply asking Obama to refrain from the gay topic,” said Kang’ata.
Members of the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya also hinted at plans to sit outside Parliament in solidarity with lawmakers. The White House has, however, maintained that Obama will not be dictated on what to talk about during his visit this weekend.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement that the US President would not avoid the gay topic during his visit. “I’m confident the president will not hesitate to make clear that the protection of basic universal human rights in Kenya is also a priority,” he said.
State House, through spokesman Manoah Esipisu, said: “Kenya cannot tell Obama what he will and will not say. The government believes in freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution.”
