More than 160 workers of a company sub-contracted by China Road and Bridge Corporation for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) have gone on strike over delayed wages.

The casual workers based at Port Reitz section have threatened to confiscate construction equipment if they are not paid by their dues. They held demos at the project site, saying they have worked for almost two months without pay and their employer is nowhere to be found. “We have not been paid for over one month now.

Our families have nothing to eat and the contractor is running away from us,” said a worker, Kibos Mbwana. He said they will not resume duties until they are paid. The workers, comprising masons and other non-skilled labourers are contracted to build drainage systems along the railway line.

They said China Road and Bridge Corporation has been helping to find out the whereabouts of their employer. “He is not picking our calls. We heard that he was seen in Jomvu and Mariakani areas of Kilifi county but he does not come to the site,” said Kai Amin, a masonry.
