Jubilee MPs on Friday held a meeting to deliberate on the Nairobi governor race as the battle for the city's top job takes shape. The MPs agreed to support whoever wins in the nominations as they strategised on how to ensure Jubilee captures as many seats as possible in the city in the next General Election.
The meeting, convened by Starehe MP Maina Kamanda at a Nairobi hotel, brought together seven legislators, Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and former MP Margaret Wanjiru, both who have declared their interest in the seat.
Conspicuously missing were Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru and Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja all who have also shown interest in the seat.
However, Kamanda said the absentees had sent apologies, including Mathare MP Steven Kariuki who is out of the country. Kamanda said all the aspirants seeking the Jubilee party ticket had been invited.
MPs present were James Gakuya (Embakasi North), George Theuri (Embakasi West), John Njoroge (Kasarani), John Ndirangu (Embakasi Central), Yusuf Hassan (Kamukunji) and Nairobi Women's Representative, Rachel Shebesh.
Kamanda said his caucus has no preferred candidate for the governor's seat and would work with whoever wins in primaries. “All the aspirants for the position are equal according to us and are free to move to any part of Nairobi to ask for votes, even in my own constituency.
We are not supporting anyone of them until Nairobi people decide when it comes to nomination time," he said. So far, no one from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has declared interest to challenge Kidero who faces stiff competition from five Jubilee aspirants and Cord leader Raila Odinga's former legal adviser Miguna Miguna.
Jubilee Party is determined to clinch the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, having lost in the 2013 General- Election but the fear that lies ahead is a break-out owing to the nomination process.
