The Senate yesterday failed to pass the two-thirds gender bill sponsored by nominated lawmaker Judith Sijeny due to lack of quorum even as the August 27 deadline looms.
“I don’t think it is fatal because I have adequately lobbied for this bill and many people were okay with it. I was ready and willing to make it acceptable to everybody else,” she said.
The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) had earlier told the joint Parliamentary Committee on matters related to IEBC that both Houses could be declared unconstitutional and dissolved if the Bill is not passed.
Religious leaders, among them National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) General Secretary Peter Karanja added their voice, saying the delay depicts an abdication of responsibilities by elected leaders. “It is unfortunate for Members of Parliament to fail to pass the law even after the extension,” he said after a meeting of leaders from different churches in Nairobi.
