A slow clearance of cargo at the port of Mombasa has been blamed on an attempt by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) staff to blackmail the government following the sacking and arrest of several officials in connection with theft of containers.
A slow verification of clearing documents has caused a huge backlog of cargo for more than three days.
Association of Importers of Kenya chairman Peter Mambembe claimed yesterday that some employees, who are part of cartel involved in aiding tax evasion and theft of cargo, were on a go-slow to sabotage the work of KPA’s new managing director Catherine Mturi.
“We know some people are opposed to reforms at the port,” he said.
Clearance system
Transporters say KRA officials deployed to countercheck movement of cargo conducted verification at a slowly pace.
There was also reported cases of hacking of cargo clearance system to deliberately sabotage clearance and movement of goods out of the port.
The port management has introduced new verification measures to curb cargo theft at the gates.
