Legislators are proposing a countrywide installation of surveillance cameras inside police stations to curb high-handedness by officers to suspects. Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa said the cameras would serve as a deterrent against custodial torture.
Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery, who was appearing before Parliament Security and Administration Committee, said the government will consider adoption of the proposal. Ichung’wa’s proposal struck chord with several other MPs including Nyandarua’s Wanjiku Muhia and his Gatanga counterpart Humprey Njoroge.
Alluding to the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and their driver, Njoroge said CCTV footage would have come in handy in bringing their killers to book. Meanwhile, Nkaissery expressed concern over the resurgence of militia groups in the country, pointing at Kiambu and Mandera where he promised to visit in a bid to suppress them.
