National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has teamed up with Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to tame hate mongers as the country prepares for the August 2017 General Election.
NCIC chairman Francis Kaparo (below) yesterday revealed the government has resorted to a multi-agency approach to curb hate speech and war mongering which he noted is putting the stability of the country at risk.
He blamed the recent Cord’s anti-IEBC demonstrations to the current wave of hate-mongering among politicians across the two main political formations.
NCIC also announced it is shifting its focus to the social media as well where it complained many Kenyans are posting hate messages on daily basis.
A part from the partnership with the Police, NCIC has also roped in the services of the Judiciary and the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to ensure hate mongers do notgo scot free.
Kaparo said special counsels and prosecutors will handle cases of hate speech. The Commission, he noted, is also considering pushing for establishment of special courts to try hate suspects.
“What is going on in the country is not normal, it is even threatening the stability of our country,” said Kaparo yesterday during a joint press conference with DCI Ndegwa Muhoro at Commission’s office in Nairobi..
Muhoro said the government will not take sides in the war against hate speech and will arrest any leader no matter the political inclination. “We will go for all regardless of political inclinations. We will not take sides, will handle them as they come,” added Muhoro.
