Anxiety is mounting in Mombasa and other Coastal towns following latest cases of disappearance of youth as several families raise concerns about their kins’ whereabouts.

The office of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Coast region says more than 30 cases of missing young men and women mostly aged between 20 and 32 have been reported since February, this year.

KNHCR Coast regional coordinator Jaffar Mohammed, the commission is compiling details of the reported cases before they decide on the next cause of action on whether to present the cases to police or file a court case.

Uncertainty continued to rock families affected as it is not clear whether the youth might have crossed to Somalia to join al Shabaab militia or they could be in police custody for interrogation.

Some of the families however claimed that state security agents may have been involved in the disappearances and are now calling on the government to intervene.

Abdi Farah from Fire area in Tononoka says his son Farah Abdi Farah, 21, together with his friend Ahmed Salmin disappeared after they were whisked away by armed men in a tinted vehicle shortly after leaving the mosque early last month.
